Layers of My Essence
I am an onion, layered deep and true,
Each peel a story, a veil to undo.
Outer skin, weathered by winds of time,
A facade of strength, hiding the climb.
Peel the first: my surface, bold and bright,
An imperfect overcomer, fighting the night.
Still growing, forever, roots reaching wide,
Dreams up the yin-yang, a wild, endless tide.
Deeper now, the second layer gleams,
Vulnerable heart, where the longing streams.
I want to be loved, in arms safe and near,
Trust is the key, dissolving all fear.
Third peel reveals the core, raw and real,
A physical body to get back, to heal.
Scars from the battles, yet spirit unbound,
Yearning for connection, in love to be found.
Layer by layer, know me on every plane,
From shadows to light, through joy and through pain.
I am the onion, inviting your gaze,
Peel gently, with care, through life’s intricate maze.
Art: ‘Layers of Samantha’s Essence”
The song “Human” by Rag’n’Bone Man perfectly complements my poem “Layers of My Essence” because it echoes the themes of imperfection, personal growth, and the raw vulnerability of being human—much like peeling back onion layers to reveal a core yearning for love and trust, while overcoming flaws and reclaiming one’s physical and emotional self.
