NAUTICAL DREAM
ON WHEELS
When Steel Meets the Sea
—— A Living Dream of Samantha Syrnich TLC
by Samantha Syrnich TLC
Before the dawn,
with coffee warming my hands
and the sky still holding back its light,
I stumbled upon a treasure—
steel and sea intertwined,
a dream I never knew I was waiting for.
One of one.
The only Packard “Yacht” ever to sail
the roads,
born in the mind of Louis Réard—
fashion’s daring mariner,
who once launched a bikini
and now…
In my heart’s gallery,
launches a fantasy with wheels.
Henri Chapron shaped her hull,
polished her portholes,
dressed her with flags,
cleats,
and a mast that once bore
bikini-clad laughter into summer air.
She christened the streets in
champagne,
gliding past crowds
like a vessel without tides,
anchoring only in wonder.
Decades passed—
three captains of her course,
three hearts who understood
that rarity isn’t just a number,
it’s a story with an engine.
And now,
in 2025,
she rises again from the quiet harbor of
memory
to dock in my morning—
this unexpected port of joy.
If fate were kind,
I would stand beside her in the sun,
trace the curve of her prow,
inhale the salt that isn’t there but feels
like it should be.
And if dreams dared go further,
I would take the helm,
let the wind knot my hair,
and sail the asphalt like open sea.
She reminds me—
I too carry a vessel in my mind,
a car not yet born,
my Steel Requiem.
A daily driver forged for my own
command,
waiting for the day
when it will roll into the light
as proudly as she once did,
turning heads not for extravagance,
but for the soul stitched into its steel.
For now,
I cradle this discovery like a seashell,
listening to the echo of roads I haven’t
driven,
and thanking the tide of chance
that carried her into my hands
before the sun had even risen.

The Packard Super Eight “Yacht” by Chapron: A Nautical Dream on Wheels
by Samantha Syrnich TLC
This morning, before the sun had even graced the sky, I cradled my coffee and found myself captivated by a rare marvel—a rolling work of art that spoke to both sea-lover and dreamer. The Packard Super Eight “Yacht”, one-of-a-kind, shimmering like a ship meant for land—this is a wonder that wrapped history and artistry in steel, and I am utterly enchanted.
Commissioned in 1948 by Louis Réard—the ingenious inventor of the bikini—this car was a bold symbol of style and wit. Built on a 1937 Packard Super Eight chassis, with its elegant straight-eight engine, the body was crafted by the inspired hands of French coachbuilder Henri Chapron. Its nautical flourishes—prow-like nose, portholes, flags, mooring cleats, a rear mast—were more than decoration; they were a stage for summer itself, where bikini-clad models paraded during the Tour de France caravan and at the Enghien-les-Bains concours d’élégance in 1949.
Three passionate owners in 75 years have safeguarded her story—from Réard to collector Jacques Vincent, and now, she’s back in our view. After hiding in the shoreline of memory since Rétromobile 1987, she returned in dazzling fashion at Rétromobile 2025 in Paris, with Artcurial estimating her worth at €250,000–€350,000. Some say she remained unsold; others whisper she went for €261,000 (around $269,200)—but whatever the final tally, her re-emergence was pure magic.
She still runs. Her light blue coat shelters a midnight-blue secret, and every polished curve carries the soul of an elegant yacht that once sailed the boulevards. If a car could make me fall in love, it would be this one.
I can’t help but dream: to stand before her in person, with the wind teasing my hair as though I were at sea, not on pavement. And even wilder, to flush red with joy if I could ever ride in her.
And somewhere within me lives another dream. I hope one day to unveil my own creation before vehicle-makers—a daily driver I call Steel Requiem—a testament to life’s later-stage visions, whispered into reality while we can still steer our own destinies.
Oh, to go to France!
To stand in Paris!
To feel the pulse of Rétromobile in my veins!
Retromobile is an annual classic car show—Paris’s grandest celebration of vintage and collector cars—hosted every February at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, first held in 1976 and now one of Europe’s most beloved automotive festivals.
The 50th edition is set for January 28 to February 1, 2026.
Imagine me there—eyes bright with wonder, heart full, walking those halls. One day, I hope.
This isn’t just a car—it’s a living postcard from beauty, whimsy, and ingenuity, and discovering it has felt like a sunrise inside my soul.
